Women’s History Month, All Year

Inspiration - Design and Concept

This video started with a song. Marilynn, from my favorite music licensing platform Marmoset, reached out with a playlist of songs curated for Women’s History Month. “Woman” by Jade Josephine immediately stood out to me with its heavy bass and unapologetic feel.

With this song as inspiration, Fund Her and I began brainstorming. We wanted a video that conveyed that women’s history can’t be boxed into a single month.

I took artistic inspiration from Johanna Goodman’s collage work, and especially this image:

I absolutely love the unusual silhouette (reminds me of Amber Vittoria’s illustrated body shapes) and integrated historic imagery. While I would have loved to try out Johanna’s specific collage style, I worked to use this image as a beacon for the mood and tone of the piece rather than directly copying her work. +1 for respecting artists’ intellectual property rights!

Between the mood of Johanna Goodman’s piece and Jade Josephine’s song, we had a vibe developing. We pushed the art towards a “witchy” feel, honoring and reclaiming the archetype of women who weren’t treated kindly by history.

The video shows Shirley Chisholm, Karen Bass, and Kamala Harris on pages of a sunset calendar. Scratching the name of each month out, the video shows how women’s history can’t be contained to the month of March.

To emphasize the witchy vibe, we went with a different color palette than Fund Her’s primary brand colors. I made sure to incorporate their standard bright orange and blue in little moments throughout. The typographic-heavy fourth scene provides a bridge between the witchy palette and Fund Her’s primary palette, smoothing the transition for the viewer into Fund Her’s logo bumper (which I created for a previous video).

Overall, Fund Her was very happy with the video!
